Harvest Challenges
As John Whaley’s farm grew he found himself with multiple bins spread across many sites. He always got along ‘ok’ with the smaller bins using natural air to dry, so he never thought he needed a dryer. But as his operation grew, so did the challenges to keep up with the speed of harvest and managing all the bins. In 2009 yields were high and so were crop moisture levels. Due to the high volume of extremely wet corn coming into the elevator John’s harvest slowed down drastically. He was only able to haul 2 or 3 semis a day to the elevator while the rest of his crop stood in the fields. Through this process he saw invisible loss run 10 to 12 bushels per acre as other losses from weather and head shatter grew. Despite investing in planting and harvest equipment that was armed with the latest technology, he still faced harvest challenges. It was at this point that Whaley decided his drying and storage system needed an investment, too. 

“I am the type of farmer that does my homework; I crunched the numbers and worked with my resources to develop a plan,” said Whaley. He wanted a plan that would not only be faster and more convenient, but also improve his farm’s profitability. His goal was to use his storage system to capture the market basis when crop prices were good. If the prices weren’t there, the carry would be the important part. Through his research he was able to show that a new system would pay for itself and the yield, quality, speed and convenience would all be added benefits. “It was all about maximizing my farm’s profit,” said John. 

GSI Grain System Solution 
In 2011 Whaley had 4 bins, including the 36’ TopDry AutoFlow installed. The very next year he installed another 150,000-bushel storage bin and is currently in the process of adding a sixth bin to his system. Whaley’s motivations for the upgrade started with reducing field loss, keeping the combine in motion and eliminating elevator lines and fees. With his new system he is able to solve all those problems and still increase his profitability and grain quality. His system was designed around the GSI TopDry because it provides efficiency at high capacities while maintaining very high quality. “It works well and you don’t have to babysit it,” John said. “When elevators need high-quality grain, I am always one of the first farmers they call.” After two years of operation John considers the TopDry to be the heart of his system. “If I had the chance to redo my system, I wouldn’t change a thing.”
